Public consultation findings

An outline of the results from our public consultation, where we asked what you thought of the Transport for Leeds and New Generation Transport proposals.

20 April 2009

In November 2008, we held a series of Transport for Leeds exhibitions in Leeds city centre, to give people more information about the project. We asked people who visited the exhibition to give us their views about transport in Leeds.

Information was also distributed through at libraries, One Stop Shops and people were able to fill out the survey form on this web site.

Road congestion is top problem

The findings from the 2,500 Transport for Leeds questionnaire completed show that people see road congestion as the greatest transport problem in Leeds. Over half of respondents reported that they had changed their travel behaviour as a result of congestion. People rated the high cost of bus and train fares as the second highest problem.

People told us that they wanted to see a wide range of transport improvements, the most popular of which were:

  • more reliable and frequent public transport;
  • cheaper fares;
  • reduced road congestion;
  • less crowding on public transport;
  • more park and ride sites.

What happens now?

The 2008 research has shown us that we need to carry out a further round of roadside surveys to gather more information about journeys in the city centre and the impacts of the newly-opened East Leeds Link Road and Stage 7 of the Inner Ring Road.

Find out more information about the roadside surveys are taking place between Tuesday 12 May and the start of June.

The results of this further research will help to form a draft Transport Strategy for Leeds, containing a mix of improvements for transport in the city. After another opportunity for the public to comment on the proposals in the draft, a final Strategy will be prepared for submission in 2010.
